Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Introduction:

The other day while surfing by Dallmann Computers, I noticed that his price list indicated that he carried the BenQ 5224 burner. He graciously set me up with one for this review. Thanks.

As burners have gotten faster, it seems as some sacrifices have had to have been made. Among these are noise and the possibility of a greater number of errors due to high rpms of the CDR's. Today, we're going to see how fast the BenQ 5224 really is, and how well it is at producing quality CD's error free. Let's get to it shall we?

Specs and Features:

First off is a list of specs from BenQ:

  • Writing Speed (KB/s): 7,800 (52X Max)
  • Rewriting Speed (KB/s): 3,600 (24X Max)
  • Reading Speed (KB/s): 7,800 (52X Max)
  • Seamless Link: Yes
  • Interface: Internal IDE
  • Data Buffer Size: 2MB
  • Package Dimensions (W x H x D): 11.3" x 8.8" x 4.5"
  • Gross Weight (lbs): 3.5
  • Accessories:

    Audio Cable x 1
    Installation Guide x 1
    User Manual x 1
    Warranty Card x 1
    Screw x 4
    CD Media x 1
    CD Burning Software

My biggest beef with this drive package is that it doesn't come with any Rewritable Media. . .None.

Here is how the specs translate into features. . . once again, according to BenQ.

  • 52X Writing, 24X Rewriting, 52X Reading
  • Employs CAV writing mode
  • Smart Speed auto- selects the optimum write speed
  • Seamless Link Technology for buffer under-run prevention
  • Flash Memory / Upgrade System
  • Smart Speed automatically selects the optimum speed for the media used
  • Anti-Vibration System
  • Collision Guard Technology
  • Play / Skip function buttons on panel
  • Emergency Eject
  • Dust protection design
  • Power Saving Feature

It definitely looks like it packs some promise. We shall see . . . we shall see . . .

Next, we'll take a look at the drive itself, the bundle 'o goodies, and installation.
