Closer Look:

The SCX-5635FN is a pretty traditional looking multifunction printer and like most other printers in this class, it has a secondary tray for special paper or envelopes that can flip down on the front.  This unit also has the ability to add a second bottom tray as we'll see when we look at the back in a few minutes.  When using the standard tray and specialty tray included, you still have the ability to choose paper sizes from 3"x5" to 8.5"x14" and this should satisfy most users.

The Automatic Document Feeder on the top can handle up to 50 sheets and works very well.  I never had any jamming issues when copying and faxing multi-page documents.

It is nice that the "starter" toner cartridge is a large 4,000 page unit and that the SCX-5635FN supports a toner cartridge that has a 10,000 page rated yield.  The imaging drum and all essential components are located on the actual toner cartridge and while this may make the toner slightly more expensive, it also ensures that you won't have to replace other components on a regular basis.  This unit is rated to have a 80,000 maximum monthly duty cycle, and while I doubt that it could do that for an extended period of time, it certainly should be able to stand up in a typical small office environment.

As far as connectivity goes, there is a front USB port that allows you to scan documents directly to a USB flash drive and on the rear we have more traditional connections.  The "N" in the SCX-5635FN indicates that it is a network printer, and we find the typical 10/100 Ethernet connection on the rear as well as standard USB2.0 input as well as a second USB2.0 output, additional tray feed, and the telephone input - output connections for the fax feature.  In terms of upgrades, you can add more memory as well as a wireless LAN option if required.

On the last page we'll run through some tests and see if the SCX-5635FN stands up to its rated specifications and talk about function and print quality.
