Quick Q&A / Re: Need help with Vista!
« on: November 19, 2007, 07:58:44 AM »
Again, we had this same battle when crossing over from 9x to XP. In a year, people will not have a choice but to accept it and move on. If the hardware manufacturers don't wish to support their hardware for another year because it is cheap to build a new product, so be it. I can remember the countless times that Visioneer screwed people because they would not make drivers for XP for a 2 to 5 year old product. Why? It was depreciated and something newer and less expensive was made with more functionality. Worked fine, yes, but depreciated.

It's the name of the game with technology to be keeping current, which is hard to do. Printers and scanners are the two biggest problem makers. But as I said, were are past paying $400 for a laser printer... more like $120-$150 for B&W.

Well, if you have the old copy of your previous O/S, install VMWare and use it through that. VMWare has USB support so getting the old stuff to work won't be a problem. I still have a love for UMAX scanners, but it had to go at some point.

You can blame the printer manufacturer for that, not Vista. I still have old LaserJet 4L's and 5N's that will network with Vista in a heart-beat. If you have some $50 Canon or Lexmark that doesn't work with Vista, it was time for an update.

We had this same fight with XP, it's no different now. Printers are cheap, O/S's are not.

You will probably want to look into the MX518. It is a solid mouse and works well for those that are on a budget, but want something that works well in games.

I've been getting into the MMO's recently, and I am definitely addicted to Hellgate London. A few of my friends play it every night so we can help each other level up.

Trust me folks, this RAM kicks a$$. You can't go wrong when you have Crucial memory in your system. :D

I've have to say that the temp results are dead on. I have the VF1000/RHS-88 on my GTX and it did make some improvement. I wouldn't say that it's an overclockers heatsink, but it does work very well compared to stock cooling.

At this point, I am finding a lot of problems with nForce chipsets when it comes to Windows Vista. I've had quite a few chipset driver support problems that have yet to be resolved. If I install Vista with an Intel chipset based board with the P965/P35/X38, it runs flawless.

I've been running my 64 Bit Ultimate on my P35/X38 boards for the past little while, and I have to say that Vista is becoming my permanent choice.

For Sale/Trade / Re: Quake Wars Enemy Territory

Ahh I see. The price does make the game attractive, and I will say that is not bad game. I played it and I did like it. Sorry for the misconception on the sale. :P

General Hardware / [Frontpage News]Asus Eee PC
« on: November 03, 2007, 02:59:03 PM »
So far two of these have been returned to the MemX location in Edmonton. The complaints were regarding dead pixels in the LCD and stability of the Linux distribution on the Eee PC. Though this unit is only $400 to $500, some people don't realize that this is not a W7, but an expensive "toy".

I know that a Windows O/S will work on this device, but finding adequate solid-state storage comes at a premium.

You'll find that some people want to off-load their copies of the game, and I don't blame them. There are more servers than there are players, and the gameplay is too related to Battlefield. Combine that with so many better titles that were recently released, and you have a dead game.

Recent Changes:

E6300 -> E6850
GA-965P-DS3 -> GA-P35-DS3R
2 x Crucial 1GB PC2-6400 -> 4 x Crucial Ballistix Tracer 1GB PC2-6400
X1950XT -> 8800 GTX
80GB 7200.7 SATA-I -> 320GB 7200.10 SATA-II, making them of them in my system.

One problem:

WSUS requires Server 2000 or 2003 to function. It's more of a hassle to setup for the average user.

After looking at the game, I'm not even impressed with it. The graphics are somewhat "Doom 3" looking. I've been better texture work in Far Cry quite frankly.
