AMD Istanbul Opteron ProcessorAMD quietly launched the 6-Core Istanbul processor back in June of this year, but they have plan to bring this chip to general consumers.
This will be the Thuban. It has the capability to be very efficient –
40W of power for all six cores.
The Xeon processor seems to have a price advantage at this point, but it lacks two cores.
Microsoft Offers Free Windows 7 RTM Trial.
According to ComputerWorld Microsoft is giving away a 90 day trial for Windows 7 RTM. In the past, only the beta and RC versions were available as a public download. I see this as a good move, but if you have to do a fresh install at the end of the trial like it appears right now, you’ll have a lot of angry customers. Hopefully, MS figures this out and lets users enter a valid key and keep going.
Mac clone maker sues Apple over Snow LeopardIt’s our favorite Lawsuit Soap Opera and it just doesn’t seem to end. Apparently the latest release of Leopard makes it harder for Psystar to knock-off Apple products and put the latest OS on their clones. I would still consider an Apple clone as I think the operating system is solid, but I can’t stand paying an extra $500 to $1000 for the Apple logo. Who is paying Psystar’s legal bills? Is it Bill Gates.
All Zune models not named ‘Zune HD’ on the outsIt seems that Microsoft is putting all of their eggs in one basket with the Zune HD and they are pulling all other Zune models. If you want a cheap 4GB, 8GB or 16GB flash-based Zune, you’d better hurry. The same goes for the 80GB and 120GB HDD versions. It is possible that Microsoft will be launching sizes greater than 32GB. Jason would love to see a 500GB HDD-based Zune HD – as would I. When we record the Episode it was a rumor, it has now been
confirmed by Microsoft.
Vonage App Gets Approve – Good Voice No.
I’m sure that Google Voice people are even more choked now that VOIP giant Vonage has an app approved for iPhone and iPod touches, but the Google Voice app is still blocked.
YouTube Wants in on the Online Movie Rental (but it still iHurts)
It seems that Google thinks there is a ton of money to be made in the online movie rental space. Whatever happened to Google being a search engine? I think they are spreading themselves too thin. Have you ever rented a movie online? (eg, Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, Zune, etc)
Apple to Sell 50 Million iPhones.
They can either do it by selling to other countries that currently don’t have access, opening up the carrier restriction, or by trying to tap the Enterprise market. It looks like they are going to try all three.
