Fenix PD35 TAC LED Tactical Flashlight - Patriot Ed.

Print

It’s no secret that Fenix makes great lights and they have recently commissioned one for the United States of America and we are looking at the "Patriot" version today. This is an updated PD35 TAC and it is a 1000 lumen light that features a rear tail-cap, side button for mode selection and a paint-job that would make any American Patriot proud. As with many of their other lights, it runs off either a single 18650 or a pair of cold-resistant CR123 batteries. If you're not American, this flavor and window-dressing may not suit you, but the PD35 TAC is the same light underneath. We'll take a look at the light in more detail, but paying particular attention to the actual light - and not the paint.

First Look:

The PD35 is a 1000 lumen, 18650 or 2x CR123A flashlight that is IPX-8 rated for 2 meter submersion in water. It can withstand almost an infinite number of 1 meter drops onto whatever surface you choose and has five power output levels as well as a strobe mode. These are controlled by a rear tail-cap switch that can be used for momentary on or click-on, as well as a side button that selects the different output levels and switch between the outdoor and tactical modes.

Product Package

As you can see below, there are a couple of different modes (Tactical & Outdoor) and different options for output levels for each. Outdoor mode has a lot more options that range from 8 lumens and a range of 17 meters, to 1000 lumens and a range of 200 meters. More on that in a bit.

Modes / Output

The front of the box looks pretty standard for a Fenix light as does the rear. The only indication that things are a little different is that there is a stick on the back that says "Patriot".  Once you open the package, you immediately see why.

Bundle

Inside the package you get the PD35 light with bold Cerakote as well as a manual, warranty card, extra rear button cover, a pair of replacement O-rings, a lanyard and a case for your belt.

Features & Specifications:

This special edition PD35TAC Patriot Cerakote Finish Tac Light was designed with the help of BlownDeadline Cerakote Finish. Fenix-store.com has brought many cerakote colors to the PD35TAC and UC35 flashlights, but this one is special. No other flashlight company in the world has this custom PD35TAC Cerakote finish Tac Light with the American flag on it. This special cerakote finish will stand out from any other flashlight that you have. What makes the Fenix PD35TAC even better is the max output of 1000 lumens and the fact that it's powered by one single 18650 battery.

Before you go and throw out the instructions, it's worth noting how to change from outdoor mode to tactical mode. This is achieved by a 3-second press on the side button. The light will flash twice in low-output mode and then you'll be in a different mode. If you're in outdoor mode, you'll be able to click the side button and cycle through the output levels. If you're in tactical mode, clicking the side button does nothing - a long press will get you back in outdoor mode. While in the tacticle profile, the output modes can be cycled through the rear switch. In tactical mode, the light always defaults to "Turbo" at 1000 lumens. The only output options are strobe and low in this mode.

Front Lens Rear

I’m not sure how "Tactical" a light is that requires you to cycle through bright and strobe modes in order to get a nice low output and in fact, I find the outdoor mode a bit more tactical as it remembers where you left the setting. In Tactical mode, the light always comes on at 1000 lumens. This is great if your tactical situation includes targets up to 200 meters away. If your tactical operation includes stealth in a building, where there may or may not be combatants, turning the light on at 1000 lumens each time isn't very … [tactical].

Conclusion:

Fenix has taken a trusty PD35 and given it a bit of a makeover with a Cerakote version that adds a bunch of bling to a great light. There are a couple of other options for the PD35TAC if you want something a bit less bold - and even more bold. The output levels are diverse, run-time is great, the grip, control and durability of this Fenix light is just as good as anything you'll find on the market and better than most. It does most things excellent, but the "Tactical"mode is far more "Tacticool" than practical for tactical situations.

PD35TAC

Granted, you're not going into battle with "Old Glory" strapped to your hip, mounted on your weapon or likely in your hand. The outdoor mode meets all my requirements, for outdoor and tactical applications.

In the end, it's pretty hard not to like the actual PD35TAC though. Aside from the "Tacticool" mode issue, it's a pretty fantastic light all around.

I can't quite give it a 90% or above though as the default output option in tactical mode really bugs me, but it's still a solid 85%+ and thus earns our Silver Wrench award.

I'd like to thank Fenix-Store for sending this light our way to look at. If you're thinking of a gift for your favorite Patriot, this is tough to pass on. It's a solid light that does just about everything right.
