We've looked at quite a few different power supplies over the years.  We've reviewed Zalman, Thermaltake, Tuniq and Ultra power supplies to name a few.  Today we are looking at our first Power Supply from Cooler Master and have their high-end Silent Pro Gold 1000W unit on the bench.  We will be putting this unit up against our PSU test platform to find out how it performs under a heavy load.  Cooler Master does make power supplies that are rated higher, but I think a 1000W unit should be enough to power almost every system on the market today.  What makes me excited is the fact that it supports a total of 8 PCIe connectors.  This means that you can run a total of four large graphics cards.



The Cooler Master SPG (Silent Pro Gold) Power Supply comes boxed up nicely and is very well protected. It is a partly modular Power Supply that is rated at an 80PLUS Gold rating - meaning that it will be at least 87% efficient at any given point.  It also must be 90% efficient at half-load.  There are not a lot of power supplies that fit this category so it will be nice to see how the SPG stands up in our tests.



First Impressions & Bundle:

While many people will love the slightly different color scheme of the Cooler Master SPG units, I have a hard time liking the black and yellow (gold) scheme.  It grows on you a bit, but as you'll see on the next page as we take a closer look at the PSU, the modular connectors and cable ends are a little . . . well, that is my personal opinion anyhow.

PSU Bundle


The PSU comes with the main 24-pin, a pair of 2x-4pin connectors and a handful of PCIe cables.  Other PCIe, SATA and Molex cables are modular - and we'll cover them more in detail on the following pages.  Cooler Master has included a nice pouch in which you can store your extra cables and this pretty much completes the bundle.

On the next page we'll take a closer look at the Silent Pro Gold 1000W unit and dive right into features and specifications.


Closer Look:

Cooler Master makes very professional products and the overall finish on the SPG is very good.  The package is tidy and the PSU has a nice matte finish that prevents a bunch of fingerprints from marring the overall appearance of the unit.  As I mentioned previously, I'm not a fan of the color of the modular connectors on this PSU, but that is more of a personal preference issue than anything I can discount in terms of score.  The Molex and SATA connectors use the same 5-pin connector that plugs in the PSU - although the 3.3v line is missing from the Molex connectors.  The rear grill is well done and is very open - allowing for unrestricted airflow as it exists the housing.  The PSU is cooled by a single ultra-quiet 135mm Fan.

There are times when the PSU itself differs from the specifications on the box and the website so we have posted both the specs from the website as well as the rail specs taken from the PSU itself.

Cooler Master claims the PSU can handle a 1000W "Output Capacity" with a maximum "Output Capacity" of 1200W.  I take that to mean that the PSU should be able to handle 1000W continuous load.  If we do the math on this PSU we'll see that the 3.3v and 5v lines are rated a little conservative.  I added up a total output of 197.6W instead of the 150W rated by Cooler Master.  When we move up to the large 82A +12v line, we find that they nail it down at 984W - just as the math shows.  The -12v line is right on as is the +5Vsb line.  In the end, the only lines they rate "conservatively are the combine 3.3v and 5v lines.  Still, these total 1202.7W - which reaches the "Maximum Output Capacity" of this PSUs rating.  It will be interesting to see how it holds up now that we can pull an insane amount of power out of this PSU.



The Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W PSU comes "partly modular" with a few of the main cables already and permanently connected.  As previously mentioned, the 24-pin, two 4/8-pin cables and a total of four PCIe connectors come wired to the unit with the remaining cables easily attached as they are needed.  Most systems will use most of these cables although I haven't seen many motherboards that required two 8-pin cables.  The rest of the cables are pretty decent and have good lengths so they should work in almost every case.

There are a total of 8 PCIe cables included with the unit and when they are powered by a 984W 12v rail, it should be able to handle four 200W cards with ease.  That's a bunch of power.


Inside the PSU:

As we open this unit, please keep in mind that opening a Power Supply will completely void the warranty.  Not only that, but because of the large capacitors, you can suffer a serious electrical shock if you touch the wrong thing.  Please do not open your PSU to compare what the insides look like.  I'm a "trained" professional, meaning that I've got shocked a time or two and know where not to touch, and with that in mind and the smell of burning hair in the air, click on the images below for a closer look.

The PSU is very roomy inside and allows for unrestricted airflow from the large 135mm fan.  There is enough space to put in slightly larger components for the bigger models.  The cooling looks more than adequate for an 87+ rated PSU.  Even under load the PSU stayed pretty cool and we measured a maximum temperature of 52C during testing and remained extremely quiet.  The thing with high-efficiency components is that they give off less waste heat and actually don't need as good of cooling as poor quality units.



Test Setup & Info:

In the past, we've prided ourselves on real-world testing.  For graphics cards, CPUs and memory, what matters is what takes place in real applications and games.  We also held that philosophy for PSU testing, but after a while, we realized that there is more to a PSU that being able to run a machine stable over a few weeks or months.  In reality, if there is a lot of ripple, this can damage sensitive traces on your $700 graphics card or $1300 CPU.  A multi-meter alone is not good enough to check PSU voltage stability.  It's for this reason that we've updated our PSU testbed, and will continue to improve the detail and quality of our PSU reviews.  That being said, we will still be testing the PSU in a system and will be including stress tests from real components in the real world.

We have purchased a Tektronics TDS2002 60MHz Dual Channel scope and it has already become invaluable around the shop here at BCCHardware headquarters.  I've used it to troubleshoot everything from PSU's to Radars, and we are using it today to check the stability of the Cooler Master SPG 1000W PSU on the next page.


Testing - 5W, 553W & 1075W: 

We initially plugged the PSU into an EZ PSU Tester 3 in order to power it on for our "idle" measurements.  As noticed below, the voltage rails were fairly stable with no load, but these aren't necessarily indicative of overall load performance.  According to our Kill-a-Watt, the power draw was 5W.  We thought these results would be interesting to include and compare with other power supplies to see how they manage a non-load situation, and how much power the PSU itself will draw.

1078W LoadThis is the first Cooler Master PSU that I've looked at and I honestly didn't know what to expect.  This PSU is not very expensive for a "Gold" rated PSU.  As a result, I didn't expect it to be as stable as other PSUs I've looked at recently.  As you can see by clicking the images above, we captured a small 18mV ripple & noise measurement on the 3.3v rail, up to 24mV on the 5v rail and 56mv on the +12v line.  This is nice and clean power as ATX specifications state 50mv is allowable on the 3.3v and 5.0v rails while 120mv is acceptable on the 12v rails.  Even with a really heavy load the Cooler Master SPG 1000W stayed well within specifications on the rails.  The 5v line never strayed above 25mV while the 3.3v line stayed very solid at all loads.  The + 12v lines stayed pretty clean, but the -12v line was the "noisiest" at 82mV noise when under a 1075W load.  That being said, we were really pushing this PSU as we've done a little tweaking to PSU Test Platform and will update that article in the near future.

The voltage is very solid on the SPG 1000W PSU and while ATX specifications allow an incredible 1.2v fluctuation on the 12v lines - we saw only 0.4v on the -12v line and a mere 0.1v on the +12v line.  The 5v and 3.3v lines were even more solid.  Even though we are allowed a 0.5v variance on the 5v line - we saw a mere 0.02v change.  The 3.3v line is allowed to fluctuate just over 0.3v, but it stayed sock solid with a small 0.03v dip at full load.  This is an excellent showing by Cooler Master.





Cooler Master has been doing the Power Supply thing for a while now and they have several lines of units to choose from.  They have Silent Pro M, GX Series, eXtreme Power Plus, Elite Power and more.  The Silent Power Gold is currently their top of the line series and it seems to perform very well.  We put it to the test and pushed it to its rated limit and slightly beyond and it still survived and did so with dignity.  It continued to deliver high-quality power to our system and we were able to confirm that it can live up to its 1000W claims.  It had no issue powering a Tri-Crossfire system running an overclocked Core i7-920 and a host of other hardware - including an additional 400W 12v load.

It proved to be very solid and stayed within acceptable temperature levels as well.  It wasn't as cool as the Zalman ZM850-HP, but it was still very quiet.  I was very impressed to see Cooler Master include 8 PCIe cables and a hefty enough line to run a quad CrossfireX or a Tri-SLI system.  While the color scheme doesn't get me all excited, the reliable power, clean output and ability of this unit to run at and above its rated load makes it a winner.

There really isn't much of a downside to this PSU.  It is nice and quiet.  This is a very nice PSU that certainly deserves a second look.
