Today we are going to take a look at a couple monitors from Samsung, the SyncMaster 245B and SyncMaster 245T, both of which are 24" Widescreen LCD's. Both of these monitors are very similar, however before we even begin I need to point out a couple major things, first of all, the price. The Samsung 245B retails for approximately $385 USD and the 245T retails for approximately $670 USD, so right off the bat we've got a significant price difference. Why such a price difference? Well, the 245T features options such as HDMI and Component inputs, USB Ports,. Picture-in-Picture, as well as it boasts a higher-end LCD panel (S-PVA-Panel) . The Samsung 245B is more of an economical model from Samsung, it doesn't feature any additional inputs like the 245T does, as well as the 245B uses a TN-panel for its LCD. We'll go more into the details of each of these monitors later on in the review.

Now that I've mentioned that these monitors use 2 different LCD panels (TN-Panel and S-PVA Panel), I'm sure the majority of our readers are confused already, and before we go any further I'll try to explain with the help of wikipedia. You can read the entire article over here at wikipedia, but I'll take some quotes from the full article to help explain the differences. This will probably not make much sense to most people out there, however if you're in the market for a new LCD you've probably heard the TN vs. S-Panel debate, and this article is a good starting point in helping you know the difference between panels that LCD-makers use.


PVA (patterned vertical alignment) and S-PVA (super patterned vertical alignment) are alternative versions of MVA technology offered by Samsung. Developed independently, they offer similar features to MVA, but with higher contrast ratios of up to 3000:1. Less expensive PVA panels often use dithering and FRC, while S-PVA panels all use at least 8-bit color and do not use kkkkk color simulation methods. Some newer S-PVA panels offered by Eizo offer 10-bit color internally, which enables gamma and other corrections with reduced banding. PVA and S-PVA offer good black depth and wide viewing angles and S-PVA also offers fast response times using modern RTC technologies.

TN + film

The TN display suffers from limited viewing angles, especially in the vertical direction. Many use 6, instead of 8, bits per color, and are consequently unable to display the full 16.7 million colors (24-bit truecolor) available from modern graphics cards. These panels can display interpolated 24-bit color using a dithering method which combines adjacent pixels to simulate the desired shade. They can also use FRC (Frame Rate Control), which quickly cycles pixels over time to simulate a given shade. These color simulation methods are noticeable to most people and bothersome to some. FRC tends to be most noticeable in darker tones, while dithering appears to make the individual pixels of the LCD visible. Overall, color reproduction and linearity on TN panels is poor. Shortcomings in display color gamut (often referred to as a percentage of the NTSC 1953 color gamut) are also due to backlighting technology. It is not uncommon for displays with CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps)-based lighting to range from 40% to 76% of the NTSC color gamut, whereas displays utilizing white LED backlights may extend past 100% of the NTSC color gamut – a difference quite perceivable by the human eye.

The transmittance of a pixel of an LCD panel typically does not change linearly with the applied voltage, and the sRGBRGB value.


Hopefully that gives you a better understanding of the differences between the two monitors, while the average consumer might not be too interested in the differences, these differences are a major part of the price difference between these two monitors, as the S-PVA is a higher end panel and the TN panel is more aimed at the "Budget" consumer.

Let's move on to taking a closer look at these two monitors, I have also included a couple pictures at the end of this section to show the similarities between the two models.

First Impressions - Samsung SyncMaster 245B:

I received the Samsung SyncMaster 245B almost a full month before I received the 245T, and began using it immediately. I replaced a 20.1" monitor that I had been using for a while, and it's really amazing how small my old 20.1" monitor looked when compared to the new 24" 245B. Right out of the box I was impressed with the appearance of the 245B, and thanks to its nice height-adjustable stand and all black coloring scheme, this monitor looks pretty impressive sitting on your desk, even before you get it powered on.

First Impressions - Samsung SyncMaster 245T:

Like I had mentioned before, I had been using the Samsung 245B for almost a month before this second monitor showed up, so when I first pulled it out the box it looked very similar to the 245B. The 245T has quite a few more inputs (HDMI, Composite, USB), and it also features a glossy black finish, but otherwise the stand and overall look is identical to the 245B.

Once again I was very impressed by the nice sleek and professional look of this monitor; in addition the height-adjustable stand is a nice feature and allows you to really adjust this monitor to your liking.

As you can see in the comparison pictures these monitors look very similar to each other. The 245T has a black gloss finish, while the 245B does not, however Samsung has also released a 245BW model that is the same as the 245B but with a gloss finish also.

Samsung 245B and Samsung 245T - Testing:

In everything we try and be fair, accurate and as objective as possible when it comes to testing hardware.  In the past, LCD reviews were done completely subjectively, but we have purchased some equipment that takes some of this out of the equation.  Take a look at our LCD Testing methodology over here to get a better idea of how we test LCDs.

For testing of these LCD's, I had them both setup as a dual-monitor setup for well over a month, in my testing I've included my findings, as well as some readings with a luminance meter and color meter to help show the differences between the two models.


Color Accuracy Testing:

Our first test is with the Spyder 3 colorimeter, this test shows how well a monitor produces accurate color.

These tests were done with the contrast and brightness both set at 50, both monitors were tested straight out of the box, and both were a bit off.  The 245T was very close, however needed a minor blue and red adjustment, once that was done the picture was very good and completely calibrated. To the untrained eye it was hard to tell that anything was off however.  The 245B was a bit off, the Reds were a bit weak, but after a minor adjustment of the Red values the 245B was able to achieve complete calibration according to the Spyder.

In the charts below, you can see the blue curved line is out target line, when the RGB values are matching the target line, the monitor is considered to be calibrated to true colors.

As you can see in the two charts above, both monitors calibrated nicely, and I was able to get them almost perfect.

Lighting Uniformity and Backlight Bleeding Testing:

For our second set of testing, we will be using a luminance meter to see how evenly the backlight and lighting of each monitor is, I have compared each monitor to each other to show the differences between the two LCD panels. All the luminance testing was taken with the Contrast set at 50, and the Brightness set at 50 on both monitors.

We use our luminance meter in a dark environment to measure both brightness uniformity as well as backlight bleeding.  To measure brightness, we use a bright white screen and measure across the screen in a grid to get our readings.  The brightest spot is considered to be 100% and the blackest point (with a black screen) is considered to be reference 0%.  The other values are obtained by calculating the difference between the two.  The screen is brightest near the center.

Now we will move onto the backlight testing, the next charts will show the backlight bleeding.

Blacklight bleeding is measured much the same way but exactly the opposite of the brightness uniformity.  On a black screen the brightest point is considered to be 0% and the darkest point is considered to be 100%.  The results shown below are the difference between the two.  The results look exaggerated but are represented proportionally.  The screen "bleeds" more toward the center.

As we can see in the charts above, the 245T was quite a bit more uniform in its lighting and in the backlight bleeding, the edges were a bit darker than the middle, but otherwise it was pretty good compared to the 245B. The 245B had a bit more range of brightness, but overall wasn't terrible, but when compared to the 245T, you can easily tell that 245B was the lower-end panel.

General Testing:


Performance - Text

For the majority of time that I had both of these monitors, I was using them as dual-screens on my main system, and the majority of the usage was for Internet/E-Mail/Text. In all my testing, I was very happy with both monitors for everyday tasks such as internet and e-mail. The 245T was a bit more crisp for text, however the 245B was very comparable, and both did very well for everyday usage. The lower viewing angle of the 245B did not come into play, as for the majority of Internet/E-Mail/Text usage, I was sitting in front of them at a desk looking straight at them.


Performance - Video

The video performance of both monitors was very good, however the 245T could quite easily be declared the winner thanks to the better viewing angles. In tasks such as watching a movie, viewing angles made a bit of difference, since most people move around a bit while watching a movie, and that's where the 245T was noticeably better. However, with that being said, the 245B did perform very well also, just in comparison to a much more expensive monitor, it was outperformed.

Performance - Gaming

Gaming on a nice big 24 Inch screen is quite enjoyable, and both of these monitors did very well in this testing. Viewing angles didn't make much of a difference in this testing, as you're looking pretty much straight at the monitor while gaming. Both the 245T and the 245B did have any ghosting issues, and with the 245T having a 6ms response time, and the 245B having a 5ms response time, I would have been surprised to see ghosting. 


Misc. Testing - Power Consumption

For this testing I measured the watts used after both monitors were fully calibrated, and tested at half (50) and full (100) brightness settings.  It's interesting to note the difference in power rating on each display.  1) 245B Rated Wattage Usage - 100 Watts and 2) 245T Rated Wattage Usage - 130 Watts

I was a bit surprised at this testing, I was expecting power consumption to be very similar, but the 245B even at 100 brightness was less than the 245T at half (50) brightness. This is most likely due to the difference LCD panels being used, but was very interesting nonetheless. When I first conducted this testing I was wondering if something was wrong, however once I looked up the rated wattage usage for both monitors it became clear that I wasn't misreading anything, the 245T is rated 30 Watts higher than the 245B, and in our testing the results were about 30 Watts different from each other.


Samsung 24 Inch Showdown - 245B vs 245T - Final Thoughts:

The point of this article wasn't necessarily to crown a winner between the two monitors that I have reviewed, but rather show the difference between the two and hopefully help make your buying decision a bit easier. Both of these monitors have their strong points, and their weak points, and I can't say that either is the "Perfect" monitor, however each monitor definitely will appeal to different consumer, and both are a good choice when buying a 24 Inch LCD monitor.

I will give my final thoughts for each monitor separately below, and provide an individual score for each monitor.


Samsung SyncMaster 245T - Final Thoughts:

Samsung 245T is really the higher end monitor of the two, and right from the start we were aware of that due to the price tag, and the type of LCD panel used.

This monitor really is an "all-in-one" solution for someone looking for a monitor that can also double as a TV, and thanks to all of its options, that's exactly what it can do. The picture quality of the 245T is very good thanks to its high-end S-Panel LCD, and when you put this monitor side-by-side by the 245B you really can notice a sharper picture and wider viewing angle. All of these options come with a price tag to match, making it one of the most expensive 24 Inch LCD's on the market, however thanks to all its options and great picture, I think this monitor is a winner and earns our "Top Pick" award.

Obviously if I had to choose between the 245B and the 245T, the 245T is the hands-down winner; however it also carries almost twice the price tag, and is almost overkill for most users that just need a basic LCD monitor.

Samsung SyncMaster 245B - Final Thoughts:

I received the 245B almost a month before the 245T showed up and have been using it for almost 3 months now on a daily basis, and quite honestly for the price of this monitor, I am very happy with it overall. The viewing angle isn't the greatest; however for the average user that has it on a desk, and is looking straight at it all day, it will do the trick nicely. The lack of extra features probably isn't a big deal for majority of users that are just looking for a monitor, and if these extra options aren't a big deal for you, you can save a fair amount of money.

The price of the 245B is pretty tough to beat, with it retailing in the sub-$400 dollar range, it's pretty tough to resist. The picture quality of the 245B isn't as good as the 245T, however for a user that isn't worried about extra features and just needs a basic monitor with a big viewing area, the 245B is an excellent choice, and for the price of this monitor, it's a very good value.

Even though this monitor scores just below our "Top Pick" criteria, it's still a great value and a very nice monitor, and for the average user that wants a nice big monitor with lots of desktop space, the Samsung SyncMaster 245B is a great choice.
