When it comes to overclocking RAM, we naturally think of Corsair, Crucial and OCZ.  These companies have dominated the enthusiast market for years, but today we are looking at some new memory from Super Talent that wants to share the spotlight.  This kit is rated at 1000Mhz at 5-5-5-15 which are pretty standard timings for memory of this speed.  This memory seems to be fairly plain in terms of features and specs, but we'll see how it holds up during testing in a couple minutes.  First, we'll learn a bit more about Super Talent and take a look at their memory.

First Look - Packaging:

Super Talent hasn't blown their budget on packaging the T1000UX2G5 memory.  The packaging is about as plain as you can get and still put it in a clamshell package.  This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're shopping for this memory in a retail environment, flashy packaging gets your attention.  If anything the minimalistic packaging may turn heads of those budget conscious shoppers, but sadly men like shiny things and would probably pass up the Super Talent package for some GeiL or Patriot memory.

Extreme Performance
Our Overclocking memory is designed for maximum performance in intensive gaming, music encoding and video editing applications. These modules are engineered to support high clock speeds and low latencies for high torque computing.

Broad Product Range
Super Talent offers one of the largest selections of high performance Overclocking memory in the industry, including 2GB and 1GB kits and individual modules in a variety of clock speeds and latencies. Our overclocking products are tailor made for today's leading enthusiast motherboards.

Made in USA
All Super Talent Overclocking modules are built in our San Jose, California headquarters - one of the largest and most advanced memory module factories in North America.

Hand Tested at Rated Specs

Every Super Talent Overclocking module is hand tested in a popular enthusiast motherboard at its rated clock speed and latency settings, to ensure not only functionality but also performance. That means Dual Channel kits are tested as a matched pair in a dual channel motherboard, and packaged together immediately after test.

Excellent Thermal Characteristics
All Super Talent Overclocking modules include a thermally bonded aluminum heat spreader that efficient wicks heat away from the memory. Keeping the memory chips cool helps the modules perform better and last longer.

Lifetime Warranty
Super Talent backs its Overclocking memory with excellent service and support and a limited lifetime warranty.

Super Talents really isn't forthcoming with their listed specs but you get the idea that this memory is "mainstream" DDR2-1000.  Below we've included a couple of pictures to show off the nice blue heat spreaders that are attached by thermal tape only.  There are no clamps holding the heat spreaders on these modules, but try as I might, I could not loosen a heat spreader to take a look at the memory chips.

Test Info:

We used a few synthetic benchmarks to see how this memory scales in theoretical performance.  When testing memory bandwidth, many factors come into play on a system and it is very hard to tell if the memory is actually providing additional performance or if the benefits from running memory faster are the direct result of a better CPU:Memory ratio, FSB or many other factors.  We used Everest Ultimate, FutureMark PCMark05 and SiSoft Sandra 2007 for our benchmarks.

We ran our benchmarks at several different speeds based on some overclocking numbers we managed to get from this memory.  As you can see in the "SuperTalent - SPD" picture above (center), the memory has Serial Presence Detect (SPD) timings of 3-3-3-9 @ DDR2-400, 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2-533 and 5-5-5-15 @ DDR2-667.  This is so that the memory will post in systems that do not provide enough voltage to run the memory at DDR2-1000.  We set out to use the popular timings above and see how fast we could get the memory to run at each timing set.  We also posted up performance numbers at DDR2-800 and DDR2-1000.  The memory was able to run with tight timings of 3-3-3-8 up to 714Mhz, and 4-4-4-12 up to DDR2-890.  We were able to run the memory at its max rated speed of DDR2-1000, but we weren't able to take it much higher than that at all.  We topped out at DDR2-1014 on our test platform.  I'm not sure if this is entirely the fault of the memory however, as we were having some issues with memory dividers.  Regardless, the results are posted below:

The Super Talent T1000UX2G5 kit performed very well for a CAS 5 DDR2-1000 kit.  It is a very nice 2GB in size and seems to be a very good upgrade choice for someone who wants some fast memory without forking over a mortgage payment to make it happen.  This memory can be ran at much tighter timings at very decent clock speeds if you are not interested in running at PC2-8000 right now, but want your options open for the future.  I expected much faster clock speeds out of the memory, but as I mentioned previously, it could very likely have more to do with a memory divider issue, rather than memory quality.

In the end, I could recommend this memory to anyone looking for a 2GB DDR2 kit, and with Vista gaining popularity; I know many of you will be looking for an upgrade.

  • Fast kit gets the job done.
  • DDR2-1000 that scales with tighter timings as slower clock speeds.
  • Doesn't require 2.2v to operate at 1000Mhz.
  • Cheaper than many other 2GB DDR2-1000 kits.

  • Doesn't clock up as well as I hoped.
  • Packaging very plain - may get overlooked on the store shelf. Rating
