Today we are looking at a nifty product from Luxa2 that makes Chris Angel look like a total rookie. We have the Luxa2 Magic Boom Box on the bench and for less money than a burger combo at 5 Guys, you can get a nifty piece of hardware that makes your phone's built-in speakers sound a little less crappy. The Magic Boom Box doesn't require any wires to plug into your phone, nor does it require Bluetooth, WiFi or Infrared connection - simply place your phone on the box and it will magically boost the volume level of your device. Can it really be that good and that easy? We'll find out as we continue below.

Luxa2 is a division of Thermaltake that focuses on mobile technology and they provide interesting solutions to common problems. They have a whole line of audio products as well as holders, power banks and more. The GroovyT is at the bottom end of the price point when it comes to speakers, and while the price tag is small, the feature list of this little box is pretty impressive.

It will work with pretty much any phone that has a built-in speaker and it packs an 800mAh battery that will get you about 5.5 hours of play time. In reality, I think it does a little better than this as I've had it for a couple of weeks and have only charged it once. I don't use it all day or every day, but it is great for catching up on some podcasts and for listening to Google Play Music when I have some downtime. It's not crazy hi-fi by any means, but at $15, it's not supposed to be.

First Impressions:

We first saw this unit back at CES 2014 in Las Vegas and were impressed with the simplicity of the idea then and as it matured to be a retail product, we are happy to see that it remained pretty much the same and is a nicely polished product. The bundle included with the GroovyT includes a USB charging cable as well as a short AUX-In cable to connect to devices that don't have a speaker. Also included with the GroovyT is a simple manual that basically tells you to charge it and put your phone on top of the device.

The GroovyT "possesses supernatural powers that can amaze and leave you in audio awe". That, at least is what the marketing department for Luxa2 claims. The reality is a little bit different. While the setup and connecting the device to your phone is simple, the audio quality can be a little off. There is an Android App that helps you tune your phone so that the sound is much better than your stock music player may produce. For the GroovyT, this App is basically an equalizer that will let you turn down your bass if you need to in order to balance the sound and prevent distortion.

The GroovyT works by way of magnifying vibrations from the speakers of your device and playing them out through the speaker. It's very simple and it works quite well.

On the next page, we'll take a quick look at the specifications of this device and then share our thoughts.

For this section, we head on over to the Luxa2 website and pull some information to share. If you want all the details and up to date information, please always make sure to visit the manufacturers website.

While I have bragged up the GroovyT a fair bit at this point, you may be starting to wonder if this is an "advertorial". I assure you it's not and here's why:

While the GroovyT is different than any other speaker "dock" we've seen before, it is limited in its audio fidelity. I first placed my Nexus 5 on the GroovyT and couldn't actually get it to produce much more than a low hum. There is a strip on the top at the left side that is the sensor that detects your phones audio. If you phone's speakers aren't touching this part, you won't get much or anything for audio. One feature that Luxa2 promotes is that this can be used to enhance your mobile games by holding this under your phone while you play. The problem is that if the phone shifts at all, your audio will drop off - greatly reducing the quality of your gaming experience.

Does the GroovyT sound better than my Nexus 5? Absolutely! The speaker in the Nexus 5 is a little weak and if you are planning on listening to a free Audiobook on your phone in a large room, you'll soon realize that you need to turn up the volume beyond what the N5 is capable of. It is impressive how well it works, but it's not a high-end audio dock. Remember that it is only passing vibrations when used as it is designed. To get the most out of it, you WILL need to adjust your bass, treble and midrange, but once you do, you'll be happy enough if you don't turn your phone volume up too high.

The volume controls for the GroovyT are your phones volume controls. Remember, this product is designed for simplicity.

If you turn up your phone volume too high and try to listen to some Techno or heavy Funk, the distortion at stock EQ settings on my device was horrible. I tweaked these and was much happier all around. It is magical the way it magnifies sound.

Speaking of magnifying sound, it also magnifies "GSM Buzz". One day when I was using it in my office, I noticed a horrible sound coming from the GroovyT and quickly took my phone off the device as I thought it was going to blow up. Thankfully, there was no smoke and everything was working fine, but fine in this case includes GSM Buzz if you're receiving large emails. This doesn't impress me much.

Battery life is pretty good and if you use it lightly at medium volume you'll be more than happy with the audio quality and battery life. At the end of the day you're only paying $15 so you can't expect a Bang & Olufsen, and the GroovyT is more than worth the money.

Even though I've found a couple of issues with this speaker as I outlined above, I still think it is worth all $15 of your hard earned money. If you are currently using a small single speaker system that charges by USB and requires a cable to play audio, this will do much better. Other products in this category range from $10 - $20 and they aren't nearly as handy, slick and convenient as the GroovyT.

Your results will vary based on the phone you have, location of the speakers, music genre you listen to and more, but for the most part, I'm pretty comfortable giving this little unit an 8/10. Yes, it does suffer some performance issues, but overall, the convenience, form factor, style and quality are worth the price tag.

  • Decent battery life
  • Crazy magical
  • Decent sound at low volume
  • Great value for a travel speaker

  • Audio quality at higher volume
  • Picky on phone placement
  • Reproduces GSM buzz
