Today we've got a new cooler from Thermaltake on the test bench which is a new revision to the SpinQ cooler that we tested a while back (full review here). The Thermaltake SpinQ VT is most definitely a unique design and is pretty tough to compare to anything else other than the original SpinQ.

Thermaltake has quite a wide range of CPU coolers available and it should be very interesting to see where the SpinQ fits into the picture performance-wise.


First Impressions:

The SpinQ VT has a unique design and is pretty tough to compare to anything else other than the original SpinQ. The SpinQ VT is a vertical cooler unlike the original SpinQ which was more horizontal, as well as the SpinQ VT is sporting a red LED while the original SpinQ was rocking the blue LED. The SpinQ VT has more of a jet engine design and looks pretty interesting and is nice and shiny.

As you can clearly see the SpinQ VT uses a heatpipe design like pretty much every other cooler available. The SpinQ however uses a bit of a different design as compared to most other coolers and looks like a giant turbine.

As you can see in the picture below (right), the SpinQ VT features fan control via a manual dial which allows you to set the fan speed anywhere from 1000-1600 RPM depending on how much performance you need or how quiet you want your system to be.

The accessories included with the SpinQ VT are pretty standard (pictured below, right). You'll get everything you need to install this cooler on a wide variety of sockets plus a case badge for your case. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as accessories go.

Installation of the Thermaltake SpinQ VT on a LGA1336 CPU is a breeze. It's been a while since I've tested a aftermarket cooler that has used the stock cooling brackets and whenever I get one on the bench I really appreciate just how easy and quick it is to install due to the fact that you won't need to remove your motherboard to install a bracket or anything.

If you are upgrading from stock cooler you should be able to get this cooler installed in under 10 minutes with no issues.

As you can see in the pictures the SpinQ VT isn't a huge cooler and doesn't even come close to interfering with any of the other components on our test system. The only thing to take note of is that the SpinQ VT is a taller cooler than some so you might want to make sure your case can support it, however, most mid or full towers should have no issues whatsoever.

So there we go, the SpinQ VT is installed and ready to rock. Let's see how it stacks up against the competition in the next section.




Test Setup:

For Intel (LGA1336) testing we will be using the Intel Core i7 920 CPU, which produces 130 Watts of heat. This could be considered a mid-range processor, and while most Dual-Core processors produce ~50-80 Watts of heat, this should give you a pretty accurate estimate of what type of temperatures a cooler will provide you with.

For both AMD and Intel testing, we have taken all temperatures using CoreTemp v.0.99.4. CoreTemp takes a temperature from the CPU core, and allows for much more uniform results across different motherboard and CPU platforms. These temperatures may seem higher than other temperature recordings; because chances are they are taking temperature recordings using the diode underneath the CPU, which isn't able to be as accurate, and can really fluctuate between different brands of motherboards.

For all tests we are using the Highspeed PC Top Deck Tech Station , and we are using no additional cooling in our testing. All temperatures are recorded in a controlled environment that is set to 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 Fahrenheit) to provide fair results between coolers.

For all tests we use Arctic Cooling MX-2 High-Performance Thermal Compound (Paste), We use the same thermal paste in all our testing so that we can keep our results consistent. If a cooler is shipped with thermal paste pre-applied, it will be removed and we will re-apply it with Arctic Cooling MX-2 to provide fair results.

Going from low fan speeds (1000 RPM) to high fan speeds (1600 RPM) drops the temps about 2.5 degrees, which isn't too big of a deal for most users so I would assume that most people will set this cooler on the low speeds and forget about it. At low speeds this cooler is nice and quiet and you probably won't hear it over other system noise. At high speeds the SpinQ VT isn't necessarily noisy by any means, but if you've got a nice and quiet system you might be able to hear it over other noise.

So the results are in and the SpinQ VT has been able to hold its own against the other cooler we stacked it up against. The SpinQ VT didn't set any temperature records, however, it was able to keep up with most of the other coolers we tested and also offers a nice ~15 degree reduction over stock temps. Overall I would say I am pleasantly surprised at the results and I think the temperatures it offers makes it a good choice in the aftermarket cooling market.





Thermaltake SpinQ VT CPU Cooler Final Thoughts:

The SpinQ VT is one of the more unique looking coolers that we've tested in a while. Just like the original SpinQ, the SpinQ VT uses a different design than most coolers and the unique appearance might be enough for some users alone to make this cooler their next upgrade. Luckily the looks aren't the only thing the SpinQ VT have going for it, it can also provide a very significant cooling performance upgrade over stock cooling while looking good.

The performance of the SpinQ VT was very decent and when compared to all of the other coolers we've tested it was able to hold its own. The performance wasn't anything groundbreaking, but when compared to the others it was right in the middle and offers a nice 15 degree temperature decrease over stock cooling.


The MSRP on the SpinQ VT is $59.99 USD making it a little more expensive then some of the cooler we tested it against, however for a high quality CPU cooler you're going to be spending $50+ dollars so the MSRP is pretty fair in my opinion (if you search online you can probably find this cooler for ~$40 USD).

The installation of the SpinQ VT is simple, and if your upgrading you're stock cooling you won't even need to remove your motherboard which is a nice bonus. Compatibility also should be no issue seeing as the SpinQ VT supports pretty much every major chipset in the last few years from both AMD and Intel.

At the end of the day it's pretty easy to like the Thermaltake SpinQ VT thanks to its unique design, good performance and easy installation. Thanks to these features we've awarded the SpinQ VT our "Editor's Choice - Gold" award. If you're in the market for a new cooler that doesn't look like everyone else's then you will want to give the Thermaltake SpinQ VT some serious consideration.
